Domain
On this page
Every site has a free address on Closer, and you can connect your own domain (like mycompany.com) when you are ready. Open Domain in your site's menu.
Your free address
When you create a site, you choose a free address such as my-company.closer.rs. It:
- works right away, with HTTPS;
- is always on, even after you connect your own domain;
- cannot be changed after the site is created, so choose it carefully. If you need a different one, write to support.
Connecting your own domain
Whether you can connect your own domain, and how many, depends on your plan. You need a domain you already own, bought from any registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Hostinger, a local registrar…). No domain yet? The Domain page has a Hostinger link with 20% off.
Step 1: add the domain in Closer
- Open Domain in your site's menu.
- Under Connect your domain, type your domain, for example
mycompany.com(withouthttps://and withoutwww). - Click Connect domain.
The SSL certificate (the padlock, HTTPS) is free and automatic.
Step 2: add the DNS records
After you connect the domain, Closer shows a table with the exact records to add. Each row has a Status, a Type, a Name (host) and a Value, with a Copy button. The name is written the way most providers want it (@ for the domain itself, www, _cf-custom-hostname), with the full name below it. Typically you get:
| Type | Name (host) | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| CNAME | mycompany.com |
The main record that points your domain to your site. |
| CNAME | www.mycompany.com |
So the www address works too. |
| TXT | (shown in the table) | Proves that you own the domain (one for the domain, one for www). |
| TXT | (shown in the table) | Sometimes added for the SSL certificate. |
Always copy the values from the Domain screen; they are specific to your site. Export DNS records downloads all of them as a zone file (domain-dns.txt): Cloudflare and many other providers import it in one go; Hostinger can import it too. In the file the domain itself (@) is an ALIAS record, because DNS does not allow a CNAME there; delete the old A @ and www records first, otherwise the import fails with Conflicts with pre-existing RRset. On Cloudflare, change ALIAS to CNAME in the file.
To add them:
- Sign in where you bought the domain (or where its DNS is managed) and find DNS settings, DNS zone or Manage DNS.
- For each row of the table, add a new record with the same type, name and value.
- Many providers want only the part before your domain in the name field: for
www.mycompany.comenterwww; formycompany.comitself enter@.
- Many providers want only the part before your domain in the name field: for
- Save the changes at your provider.
The main (root) record. Some providers do not allow a CNAME on the domain itself (
mycompany.comwithoutwww). In that case use their CNAME flattening, ALIAS or ANAME record with the same value. If your provider offers none of these, write to support.
Cloudflare users: set the CNAME records to DNS only (grey cloud), not proxied.
If old records already exist for the same name (for example an A record for @ or www from a previous website or the registrar's parking page), remove or replace them, otherwise the new ones will not work. The table then shows Points elsewhere on that row, with what was found.
Hostinger: in the DNS zone delete the
A @record Hostinger adds by itself, then add an ALIAS@→ the value from the table (if ALIAS is not offered, a CNAME@).
Step 3: wait for verification
While Closer waits, the domain shows Waiting for DNS. While the Domain page is open it checks everything live every 15 seconds (and in the background every few minutes); it usually works within 5–30 minutes, sometimes up to 24 hours, depending on your provider.
-
Four steps show how far it got: DNS records, Domain verified, SSL certificate and Site live on your domain. A finished step turns green; the one in progress spins.
-
Every row of the table has its own status: Correct (green), Not found yet (the record is not visible yet) or Points elsewhere with what was found instead, for example
A 2.57.91.91. That usually means an old record from your provider is still there: delete it and add the one from the table. -
Click Check now to check immediately. You see Your domain works! or Still waiting for DNS.
-
When everything is ready, the status changes to Working, with SSL and Open mycompany.com opens your site on its new address.
-
If the status shows Error, read the message under it, compare your records with the table once more and click Check now.
From then on, your site's links (and its address in SEO) use your domain. The free .closer.rs address keeps working too.
Removing a domain
Click Remove domain and confirm. The site stays on its free address. You can also remove the DNS records at your provider afterwards.
Tips
- Connect the domain after your site is ready, so the first visitors on your real domain see a finished site.
- If you sell in the Store, update the Stripe webhook address after connecting the domain (it is shown in Store → Settings and Stripe).
- If you use your domain for email too (for example with Google Workspace or your hosting), do not delete its MX records; they are not related to the website.
